Fifteen years of breeding and selection has resulted in the stunning Fritillaria ‘Purple Dynamite’ — a shiny Persian lily. In late-spring and early-summer it produces clusters of flowers on 90cm stems, and these flowers are absolutely wonderful. Looking as though they are polished and buffed to a metallic-like shine, the large, hanging florets are in shades of purple, mahogany and plum, darkening to near purple-black. Fritillaria persica ‘Purple Dynamite’ progressively open from the bottom upwards. And the bright green leaves are almost as shiny!
Also, it’s unusually tall for a spring-flowering bulb, therefore making a grand statement when planted among other tall-flowering blooms such as tulips and narcissi.
The ancestors of this Fritillaria originated in southern Turkey. As such, ‘Purple Dynamite’ prefers a hot, sheltered site. However, it is also robust and fully hardy. It’s ideal for free-draining sunny borders, and looks particularly good alongside the cream-flowered Fritillaria ‘Ivory Bells’ — the two plants contrast beautifully.
