Although shades of pink and orange first started to appear in daffodil flowers around a hundred years ago, these colours still make people look twice. And Narcissus ‘Cosmopolitan’ is one of the very best! First introduced in 2016, it is a refined hybrid which, in technical terms, has a multi-flowering habit and a unique tricoloured palette—put simply, it produces up to four 6cm wide flowers per stem. Just one or two picked stems in your hand will create a lush bouquet of spring beauty! Â
The individual blooms themselves are another talking point: large greenish white petals (perianth segments) surround a long, funnel-shaped and ribbed cup that starts greenish yellow at the base, graduating through yellow to a pale orange, to an orange-pink rim. Classed as a Jonquilla narcissus (daffodil Division 7), Narcissus ‘Cosmopolitan’ is well suited to being planted in beds, borders or patio containers. Don’t forget, too, that daffodils last well as a cut flower, especially if the water in the vase is changed frequently.
